Member of Maine Gleaning Network

The Androscoggin Gleaners were founded in 2017 to reduce food waste and food insecurity across Androscoggin county. We are made possible through a collaborative network across the county consisting of St. Mary’s Nutrition Center of Lewiston, the University of Maine Cooperative Extension for Sagadahoc and Androscoggin Counties, Healthy Androscoggin and many individual volunteers.

Our work is made possible with a part-time gleaning coordinator and volunteer efforts to harvest surplus fresh produce from local farms. This produce is distributed to various food pantries, soup kitchens, low-income housing communities, and other food access sites in Androscoggin County.

In the 2022 season, the Androscoggin Gleaners harvested and delivered 9,000 pounds of fresh produce from 11 partnering farms and gardens through the work of our volunteers. This produce was distributed throughout the season to numerous food access sites across Androscoggin County, providing 60,000 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables to communities with typically limited access.
